Australian labour market snapshot
Whether you're leaving school, looking for a job or making a career change, we can help you set the right course for your career.
I want to get job-ready
If your goal is to enter the workforce as soon as possible, Vocational Education and Training (VET) may be a good fit as you can often start employment while you study.
You can enrol in a course delivered online or on campus, or you can start an apprenticeship or traineeship which would allow you to work as part of your qualification.
Upon completion of your VET course you will have a nationally recognised qualification and you can then decide to study further to advance in your chosen field.
Use the career search to find a career with high future demand and see which qualification you would need for that role in Australia.
Consider an apprenticeship or traineeship so you can learn on-the-job. Apprenticeships take 3-4 years to complete and are available in trades while traineeships take 1-3 years to complete and are available in administration, ICT, hospitality and more.
Check if there are providers that offer government funding in your state and if you are eligible. Learn more about government funding.
I want to advance in my career
Depending on your industry and career goals, consider either Vocational Education and Training (VET), a university degree or industry training.
VET training equips you with specialised skills and practical knowledge directly relevant to your industry which can expand your career options.
Higher education can open up opportunities for advanced positions and career growth by deepening your expertise and expanding your skill sets. This is typically the most costly and time-consuming option but it offers the most opportunities for career advancement.
If you already have a good foundation of knowledge and experience in your chosen field, industry training offers a quick and cost effective way to add skills that are current and aligned with industry needs.
Search for university degrees and browse courses from all higher education providers in Australia.
Check the entry requirements set by the universities. Is there a preparation course or VET course that can be completed to gain entry?
Ask if you can earn course credit towards your degree once you complete a preparation or VET course.
I want a university degree
If you want to advance into senior roles and boost your earning potential, pursuing a university degree may be beneficial.
There are alternative entry options into university outside of just your ATAR. A related Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualification may meet admission requirements or provide a pathway into a degree program.
Some universities also offer tertiary preparation courses specifically designed to help you gain entry if you don't meet the ATAR requirements.
Use the career search to find a career with high future demand and see which qualification you would need for that role in Australia.
Check if there are providers that offer government funding in your state and if you are eligible. Learn more about government funding.
Ask if you can earn course credit towards a university degree or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) towards a VET training qualification for past studies or experience.
