Immigration Consultants provide advisory services to individuals (and families) who want to migrate to Australia. They prepare and lodge visa applications on behalf of clients, at the same time providing expert advice on visa options, legal technicalities, and pathways to citizenship.
As an Immigration Consultant you could be assessing a client’s eligibility for a range of visas, checking client documents to ensure they meet government requirements, lodging an electronic visa application on the Home Affairs website, or undertaking continuing professional development training (CPD) to keep your skills and knowledge up-to-date.
To succeed in this occupation you will need outstanding interpersonal skills and an extensive knowledge of immigration laws, policies, and procedures.
PLEASE NOTE: In Australia, Immigration Consultants are called Registered Migration Agents and must be accredited with the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA).
Salaries for Immigration Consultants in Australia start at $80,000 per annum. Increase your earning capacity by gaining professional experience and specialist qualifications in business administration and migration law.
There are around 2,300 Immigration Consultants working in Australia right now. They are employed by law firms and migration agencies. Some Immigration Consultants work as independent consultants.
There are two pathways to becoming an Immigration Consultant in Australia. First, you could become a legal practitioner by undertaking a Bachelor of Laws, then completing your practical legal training and obtaining approval to practice law in your state or territory.
Alternately, obtain a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline and then complete the Graduate Certificate in Australian Migration Law and Practice.
Once you have your qualifications you will need to register as a Migration Agent (RMA) with the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA).
