It focuses not only on the skills and knowledge required to provide the best care to a patient whilst waiting for an extended period of time for help to arrive, but also the skills and knowledge required to co-ordinate an appropriate response including communications to emergency services and evacuation considerations.

Also, this unit requires the person to demonstrate personal awareness and knowledge of health and safety legislative requirements to work safely and prevent injury or harm to self and others. It covers identifying and orally reporting common construction hazards, understanding basic risk control measures, and identifying procedures for responding to potential incidents and emergencies. It also covers correctly selecting and fitting common personal protective equipment (PPE) used for construction work.

The unit excludes the use of bag-valve-mask, manually triggered resuscitators and closed-circuit oxygen units.
Successful attainment of this course will result in the issue of a Statement of Attainment for the 22575VIC VIC Course in Basic Oxygen Administration.
