A Seed Technician produces and processes seeds for use by farmers and nurseries. You’ll work in a seed processing facility and may have to sort and handle various types of seeds. Seed Technicians pack seeds ready for sale and ensure they are bagged, labelled and stored correctly. You might also liaise with customers and provide advice on the best seeds for their needs.
To be a Seed Technician you’ll need excellent attention to detail. You’ll have to be very organised and able to follow correct processes. Seed Technicians should be able to operate a range of seed processing machines and equipment. It’s important that you can communicate well with customers and understand their needs. Seed Technicians will usually work as part of a larger group so you’ll need good teamwork skills.
In Australia, a full time Seed Technician generally earns $1,150 per week ($59,800 annual salary) before tax. This is a median figure for full-time employees and should be considered a guide only. As you gain more experience you can expect a potentially higher salary than people who are new to the industry.
The number of people working in this industry has grown strongly in recent years. There are currently 3,400 people working as an agricultural technician and many of them are employed as a Seed Technician.
