Human biology is concerned with the structure and function of humans from the holistic to the molecular level. It encompasses all aspects of what it is to be human, including genetics, anatomy, physiology, anthropology, ecology and epidemiology.

As well as core units in human physiology, the Human biology major covers a broad range of areas relevant to human biology. Using an interdisciplinary approach, you’ll investigate complex biological systems. You’ll apply scientific methods; formulate hypotheses and design experiments; and collect and analyse data to develop logical, evidence-based arguments. You’ll identify major health issues affecting the population and describe developments in research initiatives. And you’ll demonstrate effective communication, interpersonal, leadership and cooperative team skills, and an informed ethical approach fitting for your future career in health sciences.

Entry requirements

Domestic Students

  • There are no mandated entry requirements.

Assumed knowledge

For astronomy and astrophysics, mathematics, statistics and physics majors: HSC Mathematics Advanced (Band 4), or equivalent. If you haven't met the required minimum level of achievement (Band 4 or equivalent), you can undertake an alternative introductory unit of study in that area.

Inherent requirements

To be eligible to graduate from your degree, you must satisfy the inherent requirements – essential activities, capacities and academic requisites – of your degree.

Recommended studies

HSC Mathematics Advanced or equivalent, at least 2 units of science.

For astronomy and astrophysics, mathematics, statistics and physics majors: HSC Physics. For mathematics, statistics specialisation: HSC Mathematics Extension 1 (Band E2) or HSC Mathematics Extension 2, or equivalent.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)

If you’ve completed prior study at diploma level or higher, you may be eligible for credit towards your degree.

Your prior learning may consist of:

  • formal learning (post-secondary study)
  • informal and non-formal learning (work and life experience).

English language requirements

When applying to study at Macquarie University, you’re required to provide evidence of proficiency in English.

You may satisfy the English language requirements if you’ve completed:

  • senior secondary studies equivalent to the New South Wales HSC
  • at least one year of full-time Australian or comparable tertiary study in a country of qualification.

The required standard of English for this degree is: IELTS band overall 6.5
