Nationally Recognised Higher EducationThe Bachelor of Science will allow you to explore your curiosity and passion for knowledge within your chosen scientific field. Your study options are flexible and diverse with a focus on professional experience in various sciences including biologist, ecologist, spatial scientist, biomedical scientist, chemist, or in other science fields.
Compulsory Core Units totaling 60 credit points as detailed below:
- Chemical Concepts: This unit is designed to give students a thorough and broad understanding of modern chemistry, providing a basis for either continued work in chemistry or for using chemistry in other disciplines. It involves chemical concepts like gas laws, thermo-chemistry, atomic structure, chemical bonding leading to shapes of molecules, behavior of solids, liquids, and solutions, chemical kinetics, and chemical equilibrium involved in acids, bases, and solubility.
OR - Introductory Chemistry A: This unit is a starting unit in chemistry and introduces the basic concepts of chemistry. Theoretical concepts are reinforced by laboratory practical work. This unit is suitable for students without a background in chemistry to develop a basic understanding of chemistry to support units in biology, environmental science, and other sciences or to progress through to other units in chemistry.
AND
- Concepts of Physics: This unit is an introduction to physics for students wishing to major in disciplines other than physics. The emphasis is on understanding the fundamental concepts of physics, such as kinematics, momentum & impulse, heat & thermodynamics, light & optics, waves, electricity, magnetism, and radioactivity and how the concepts are applied to several real-world situations. In this unit, students will use physics principles to describe, explain, and predict physical phenomena.
OR - Concepts of Mathematics: This unit develops students' mathematical skills and knowledge to solve a wide variety of problems at 100 level in science, engineering, and other disciplines. Topics include algebra, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, functions, variation, vectors, and an introduction to differential and integral calculus. MATLAB will be used for calculation and simulation.
OR - Mathematics 1A: This unit covers a range of foundation topics in calculus and linear algebra as needed for science, engineering, and other disciplines. The calculus topics include: functions, limits, continuity, logarithm and exponential functions, mean value theorem, differentiation, maxima and minima, curve sketching, L'Hôpital's rule, and integration.

- There are no mandated entry requirements.
Entry requirements
- Successful completion of the Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (or equivalent) and the awarding of an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) of at least 60*.
- Successful completion of a national qualification at Certificate III level or higher.
- Successful completion of at least 0.5 year of full-time study (or equivalent) of a higher education degree/diploma.
- Overseas secondary or tertiary qualifications considered equivalent to the above Australian qualifications.
- Attainment of a STAT Multiple Choice score of 140.
- Successful completion of the Tertiary Enabling Program, the Preparation for Tertiary Success courses, or other recognised tertiary preparation course.
- Submission of an acceptable personal competencies statement and/or employment experience.
- Defence members with service of 1 year or more at the following ranks (or higher) meet the academic entry requirement for this course:
- Air Force: Aircraftman/Aircraftwoman, Corporal, Leading Aircraftman/Aircraftwoman
- Army: Corporal, Lance Corporal, Private
- Navy: Able Seaman, Leading Seaman, Seaman
- Current School Leaver Pathways:
- Best of 3 Year 12 subject grades
- School recommendation program
English language requirements
To gain entry into Charles Darwin University, all Higher Education applicants must satisfy the University's English Language Proficiency Requirements for their chosen course of study. International applicants will be required to supply evidence of this at the time of application.
The minimum English language requirement for this course is met by either undertaking previous education in an English-speaking country or undertaking one of the following English language tests and obtaining the minimum requirements listed below.
- IELTS Academic Module: A minimum overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0.
- Cambridge Advanced English (CAE): A minimum overall score of 169, with no skill below 169.
- Common European Framework Certificate of English Proficiency: A minimum overall grade of B2.
- Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic module: A minimum overall score of 50 with no score lower than 50.
- TOEFL Internet-based Test (iBT): A minimum overall score of 60 and a minimum writing score of 21.
