The University of Newcastle

Bachelor of Commerce (Finance)

Nationally Recognised Higher Education

The Bachelor of Commerce is a practical and flexible degree, with core courses designed to give you a thorough overview of business and commerce environments, before you specialize in Accounting, Economics, or Finance.

When you study a commerce degree, you will be equipped to make a smooth transition from the classroom to the boardroom, by acquiring skills that employers value.

A sense of global citizenship is imparted through international case studies and cross-cultural analysis. Through courses in your chosen major, you will gain insight into the interplay between the financial, legal, political, and economic systems and how these factors influence the contemporary business environment, both in Australian and global contexts.

Finance

Compulsory

  • ACFI1002 - Accounting Practice
Accounting Practice extends both the knowledge and skills developed in Accounting for Decision Makers (ACFI1001). It examines the fundamental principles underpinning accrual accounting and financial reporting providing you with the technical skills of accounting, including the analysis, recording, preparation, and interpretation of accounting information.
  • ACFI1001 - Accounting for Decision Makers
Financial accounting and management accounting concepts provide the very foundation for business decision making. This course provides an introduction to financial accounting by analyzing the accounting function and the preparation of conventional financial statements. Students will develop the initial skills of financial management while beginning to engage in appropriate ethical practices.
  • ACFI2070 - Business Finance
The key intent of business finance is to maximize firm value while reducing firm risk. Focused particularly in the context of the business entity, Business Finance introduces the theory and practice of securities markets, valuation, and execution of optimal investment decisions.
  • ACFI2080 - Corporate Finance
All firms face decisions amongst alternatives when determining both how the firm will be financed and which projects offer the greatest return on investment. ACFI2080 expands across the financing decisions of firms, considers the implications of competitive markets for management, sources of long-term financing, alternative methods of raising capital, and the impact of mergers and acquisitions.
  • ACFI3130 - Derivative Securities
Investment concerns financial decision-making about where to place wealth to provide for future returns. Students develop an understanding of binomial option pricing, the Black-Scholes option-pricing model, put-call parity for equity options, and are introduced to currency options.
