Master of Teaching (Secondary)

This is a postgraduate professional qualification to teach in secondary schools, giving you the opportunity to specialise in humanities and social sciences, mathematics or science. Specialise in either one or two teaching areas at secondary education level, depending on your areas of interest.

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) is a postgraduate coursework degree that will provide you with the confidence, knowledge and skills required in the teaching profession.

You will complete core units in education and curriculum in addition to professional units of study. You will have the option to specialise in either one or two teaching areas at secondary education level, including:

  • science
  • mathematics
  • music
  • languages
  • health and physical education

You will also complete practicum placements and a final capstone project comprising an internship in a secondary education setting.

Domestic Students

  • There are no mandated entry requirements.

Admission criteria

Admission to candidature requires:

  • a bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification; and
  • completion of the teaching area specialisation requirements specified by the Faculty; and
  • completion of any additional qualifying courses prescribed by the Faculty.
  • Applicants who are one unit of study (equivalent to one quarter of a semester of full-time study or 0.125 EFTSL) short of meeting the prerequisites for admission to the Master of Teaching (Secondary) may be given special permission to study the deficient unit in another faculty or institution during their first semester while undertaking their Master of Teaching.

Prerequisites

Applicants need to be able to demonstrate a record of studies in their undergraduate study that satisfies the prerequisite requirements of the subjects they wish to teach. These prerequisites are determined by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA).

In general, you must have completed three years' full-time undergraduate study in the subject you intend to be your Major/1st Teaching Area and two years' full-time undergraduate study in the subject you intend to be your Minor/2nd Teaching Area.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language, you may be able to prove English proficiency with an approved English skills test taken within 2 years of commencing the course.

Required scores:

  • IELTS score: A minimum result of 7.5 overall including a minimum result of 7.0 in Reading and Writing and 8.0 in Listening and Speaking
  • TOEFL - IBT score: A minimum result of 105 overall including a minimum result of 23 in Reading and 25 in Writing and 27 in Listening and Speaking
  • Pearsons Test of English: A minimum result of 76 overall including a minimum result of 68 in Reading and Writing and 79 in Listening and Speaking
