Master of Teaching (Secondary)

Nationally Recognised Higher Education

Make a difference through education and inspire future generations by studying the Master of Teaching (Secondary) at CQUni. The Master of Teaching (Secondary) is an initial teacher education course suitable if you already hold a non-education three-year bachelor degree and wish to become a secondary school teacher.

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) will enable you to teach across two teaching areas. This will include a major teaching area (Years 7-12) and a minor teaching area (Years 7-10). These teaching areas are based on your already completed non-education undergraduate degree with a set number of units completed within that degree qualification.

You will complete a professional placement unit in each term of your course commencing with 10 days of observation visits in a range of learning settings in your first term and 20-day placements in each subsequent term based on a full-time study load.

In addition to building the professional knowledge and skills required to teach, the course is designed to foster dispositions for engaging in and contributing to the teaching profession through a commitment to ongoing professional learning.

Entry requirements

There are three key components to gain successful entry to the Master of Teaching (Secondary) as outlined below:

Academic Requirements (Pre-requisite Qualification)

  • A completed 3 year non-education Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Bachelor degree, or overseas equivalent qualification, with a minimum overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 4.0 which has been completed within the last 10 years* that demonstrates sufficient knowledge development in two recognised teaching areas:
  • Major Teaching Area: Study equivalent to a total of three-quarters of a year of successful full time higher education study, comprising sequential discipline study taken over three years. This equates to six units, with no more than two at first year level and no fewer than two units at third year level.
  • Minor Teaching Area: Study equivalent to a total of half a year of successful full time higher education study, comprising sequential discipline study taken over two years. This equates to four units, with no more than two at first year level.

*Degrees must have been completed/conferred within the last 10 years from the date of term commencement for the relevant intake term. Applicants who completed their Bachelor degree ten or more years ago will need to supply a letter of employment which demonstrates professional experience in the same area as their undergraduate degree. Letters of employment must be presented on a company letterhead as well as signed and dated by a delegated authority. The letter must contain position title, duties performed and length of service.

Non-Academic Requirements (Key Capabilities)

All applicants must provide a mandatory written statement in support of your non-academic capabilities, demonstrating how you hold the key attributes and motivations to become an effective teacher, as outlined by AITSL (Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership). You may consider the prompts mentioned below in each question to frame your response. For your application to be considered, you must write 200-500 words for each of the questions below:

  • Tell us what has inspired you to become a teacher and tell us why you think teaching is a good career choice for you. (In your response, describe who and what has inspired you to become a teacher and describe the types of skills and abilities you will bring to teaching.)
  • Describe one or two leadership, community and/or learning & development activities that you have engaged in. (In your response describe how these leadership, community and/or learning & development activities demonstrate your conscientiousness and coping strategies when you are faced with challenges.)
  • Describe how you manage your time when you are both planning and coordinating activities in your personal schedule. (In your response provide examples of how you have put both your planning and coordinating skills to use.)
  • Tell us about one or two times where you have utilised your problem-solving skills to achieve an outcome. (In your response explain what you learned, regardless of whether the outcome you achieved was positive or undesirable.)

English Language Proficiency

Applicants are required to provide evidence of their completed 3 year non-education Bachelor level qualification with an overall Grade Point Average of at least 4.0, which has been completed within Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland or United States of America.

About Central Queensland University

Originally founded in Rockhampton in 1967, as the Queensland Institute of Technology (QIT) Capricornia, CQUniversity Australia was granted full University status in 1992 and now has more than 30 000 students studying online and on-campus across Australia.

We have firmly established ourselves as one of the largest universities based in regional Australia, with campuses in Adelaide, Brisbane, Bundaberg, Cairns, Emerald, Gladstone, Mackay, Melbourne, Rockhampton, Sydney, and Townsville. Along with these campuses, the University also partners with several of Regional Universities Centres (RUC’s) in regional and remote parts of Australia.

In 2014, the University merged with CQ TAFE to bring together more than 175 years of combined experience in the delivery of education and training and establishing Queensland’s first comprehensive, dual sector university.

The University now delivers more than 250 education and training offerings, from short courses and certificates, through to undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees.

Study areas include apprenticeships, trades and training, business, accounting and law, creative, performing and visual arts, education and humanities, engineering and built environment, health, information technology and digital media, psychology, social work and community services, science and environment, and work and study preparation.

As a pioneer in the delivery of distance education, CQUniversity also continues to be a leader in this area with almost half of the current student cohort made up of students studying off-campus through online and mixed-mode delivery, many of whom are based in rural and remote areas.

After more than half a century working with stakeholders in regional Australia, our university is also a renowned research institution in several key disciplines and the benchmark leader for how universities should engage and collaborate with communities and industry.
