This subject is a compulsory subject within the Master of Public Health. It lays the foundation for the degree and provides an orientation to the field of public health. It provides a critical overview of public health historical development, conceptual underpinnings, and practice in the following domains.
This subject is compulsory for students enrolled in the Master of Public Health, Master of Epidemiology, and the Master of Science (Epidemiology). Students should enroll in this subject early in their program of study.

- In order to be considered applicants must have completed:
- An undergraduate degree in any discipline, with a weighted average mark of at least 65%, or equivalent OR
- An undergraduate degree and one of the following Graduate Certificates from the University of Melbourne, with a weighted average mark of at least 65%:
- Graduate Certificate in Health Economics and Economic Evaluation,
- Graduate Certificate in Sexual Health,
- Graduate Certificate in Gerontology,
- Graduate Certificate in Health Informatics and Digital Health,
- Graduate Certificate in Infectious Disease Epidemiology,
- Graduate Certificate in Public Health
- Graduate Certificate in Climate Change and Health
- In ranking applications, the Selection Committee will consider:
- Prior academic performance; and
- Public health and health-related work experience, as evidenced by a CV provided by the candidate.
- The Selection Committee may seek further information to clarify any aspect of an application in accordance with the Academic Board rules on the use of selection instruments.
- Applicants are required to satisfy the university’s English language requirements for postgraduate courses. For those applicants seeking to meet these requirements by one of the standard tests approved by the Academic Board, performance band 6.5 is required.

English language requirements
- IELTS: you need a score from a minimum of 6.5 or more in the Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS), with no bands less than 6.0.
- TOEFL: you need a score from a minimum of 577+ including a score of at least 4.5 in the Test of Written English for a paper-based test. Or a score of at least 79 and scores of at least 21 for writing, 18 for speaking, 13 for reading, 13 for listening for an internet-based test.
- Pearson Test of English: you need an overall score from a minimum between 58-64 inclusive and achieve no PTE communicative skills score below 50.
- Cambridge English, Advanced/Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): you need a Cambridge English Score from a minimum 176 with no skill below 169.
