Master of Economics
Nationally Recognised Higher EducationMelbourne Business School's Master of Economics offers advanced studies in economics and econometrics. You will gain the skills necessary to practice as a professional economist in the public or private sectors.
Graduates of the Master of Economics will have detailed knowledge of the most recent research in the disciplines of economics and econometrics and will have developed the skills needed to make their own contributions to that research. Graduates will leave as critical thinkers in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics.
The Master of Economics is designed for students with prior training in economics or a similar discipline with a strong analytical/mathematical component, who wish to acquire the advanced skills needed to practice as a professional economist in the public or private sectors. The program is also an appropriate foundation for further PhD study.

Entry requirements
Domestic Students
- There are no mandated entry requirements.
In order to be considered for entry, you must have completed:
- An undergraduate or postgraduate degree with a strong analytical or mathematical component and with a weighted average mark of at least H2A (75%)
- A statement of intent outlining why you wish to be considered for the course; and
- The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) unless you have completed an undergraduate degree in Australia or New Zealand or met one of the approved conditions for GRE exemption
Notes:
- If you have an economics background and to meet the analytical or mathematical prerequisite requirements, you will normally be required to have a major in economics including calculus-based economics subjects plus an econometrics subject with a weighted average mark of at least H2A (75%) across the major.
- If you do not have an economics background, you will require an undergraduate major of a mathematical/analytical nature including calculus, linear algebra and statistics subjects with a weighted average mark of at least H2A (75%) and will also be required to have completed microeconomics and macroeconomics subjects at least at the second year level.

English Language Criteria
For English language tests, we require documentary evidence of having obtained the minimum scores within the previous 24 months.
- IELTS: 6.5 (with no band less than 6.0)
- TOEFL (paper test): 577 with TWE 4.5
- TOEFL (internet): 79 with Writing 21, Speaking 18, Reading 13, Listening 13
- Pearson Test of English (Academic): 58-64 inclusive and no communicative skill below 50
