Graduate Diploma of Midwifery

The Graduate Diploma in Midwifery at UTS is a highly competitive course which qualifies registered nurses to be professional midwives through the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). The course meets standards of midwifery education and practice at both the national and international level. Midwives are valued members of the health care workforce who are in high demand, in both the public and private health systems, and the current shortage is expected to continue for some time.

This course is not available to international students. 

Applications for 2025 Summer commencement will open in early October 2025. Students are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible, as late applications will only be considered if places are available.

The subjects 92385 Promoting, supporting and protecting Breastfeeding (3cp) and 92384 Midwifery as Primary Healthcare: A public health strategy (3cp) will commence in December 2025. Both subjects will be delivered through online modules and students will be expected to attend one (1) face-to-face workshop timetabled for late January. Successful applicants need to be available to attend the UTS campus for mandatory workshops in the first two (2) weeks of February.

Entry requirements

Domestic Students

  • Completed Bachelor Degree (AQF Level 7) or above or overseas equivalent, in Nursing AND Current registration as a nurse in Australia AND Current employment as a midwifery student in an approved maternity unit OR
  • Current registration as a nurse in Australia AND Current employment as a midwifery student in an approved maternity unit AND Relevant professional experience AND A general capacity to undertake tertiary education, demonstrated by successful completion of hospital or college certificates, professional or staff development
  • IELTS score of 7.00 or TOEFL iBT score of 94.00 or PTE score of 65.00 or its equivalent
