Course in Initial EAL

Nationally Recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET)

This course is an absolute beginner course for a migrant and refugee background to support both language development in a social context and the settlement process of newly arrived students who have no English. It is a fee free course for eligible Tasmanian residents.

In this course, students will learn how to read and write the alphabet, have very short conversations, read and write a limited range of words and very simple texts as well as develop basic settlement vocabulary.

Learning will be based around ‘settlement themes’ to help students develop and understanding about things like health, housing, family and relationships, numeracy, the Australian community, government system, and work readiness.

While most classes take place on-campus, excursion s into the local community are used to provide practical experiences in which students can practice English and develop knowledge of, and confidence in, their new environment.
