The “Master up to 24 metres (Near Coastal)” course, formerly known as “Master 5”, empowers you to captain a marine vessel up to 24 metres long within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Additionally, this qualification enables you to serve as Chief Mate or Deck Watch Keeper on ships less than 35 metres in the EEZ. This course provides the hands-on experience essential for enhancing your skills and ensuring long-term success in the maritime field.
This course is designed for students who have achieved 80% of the AMSA (Australian Maritime Safety Authority) sea time requirements for Master up to 24 Meters NC Certificate of Competency.

Entry requirements
Domestic Students
- There are no mandated entry requirements.
1. Sea service plus proof of experience maneuvering and handling a vessel over 7.5m
- Record of sea service form 771(at least 80%of the AMSA sea service requirements).
- 360 days of sea service on vessels at least 7.5 metres long (80% is 288 days)
- At least half on commercial vessels
- Up to half on recreational vessels
Or
- The on-board sea service record from your task book (at least 80% of the AMSA sea service requirements)
- 120 days of sea service on vessels at least 7.5 metres long (80% is 96 days)
- All hours on commercial vessels
And
- A letter from vessel operator, owner, master, or chief engineer detailing your deck and engineering sea service and vessel maneuvering experience of vessels greater than 7.5m
2. Industry experience
- Have held a MAR20321 Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal) for more than 6 months and supply a letter from a vessel operator, owner, master, or chief engineer detailing your deck and engineering sea service and vessel maneuvering experience of vessels greater than 7.5m Or
- Have held a Mar10220 Certificate I in Maritime operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal for more than 12 months and supply a letter from a vessel operator, owner, master, or chief engineer detailing your deck and engineering sea service and vessel maneuvering experience of vessels greater than 7.5 metres.
