Mathematics is an enabling science. It builds a strong foundation for the function of much of the world around us.
Discrete mathematics underpins computer science, which is surely one of the most diverse applications of mathematics in the contemporary world. From algorithms to coding and everything in between, we would be unable to run our lives through technology without mathematics.
Meanwhile, other branches of mathematics, such as linear algebra and probability, have been specifically selected for study as part of the JCU Mathematics Major due to their broad relevance and importance to many different commercial and research activities. These include advancements in the fields of data science and engineering.

Course pre-requisites
Assumed Knowledge: English (Units 3/4,C), Mathematical Methods (3/4,C); or equivalent
Recommended: At least one of Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, Geography, Marine Science, Specialist Maths or Physics (Units 3/4,C); or equivalent
Minimum English language proficiency requirements
Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 1
Post admission requirements
Some majors require attendance in intensive or mixed mode attendance subjects on either the Townsville or Cairns campus. If students must attend intensive mode classes at a campus other than the one they are enrolled at, they are responsible for their own expenses.
