Bachelor of Science (Honours) (Immunology)

Immunology examines the defence mechanisms that protect humans against infections and cancers, and draws together studies in immunology, microbiology, biology, biochemistry, pathology and physiology.

Studies in immunology are leading to advances in clinical medicine, including understanding allergies, transplant rejection, auto immune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and insulin-dependent diabetes, and the development of new vaccines. In addition, immunological techniques are widely used in disciplines such as biochemistry, endocrinology, microbiology, molecular biology and genetics.

Unit of study requirements for honours in the area of immunology: completion of 36 credit points of project work and 12 credit points of coursework. The honours year in immunology provides you with the opportunity for full-time research on a proposed project supervised by a staff member expert in your selected field.

Throughout your immunology honours year you will receive guidance in research techniques by attending training programs covering experimental design, data analysis, written and oral communication and critical appraisal of the literature. You will also complete the relevant coursework units.

Entry requirements

Domestic Students

  • There are no mandated entry requirements.

To qualify for admission to the Bachelor of Science (Honours), you must:

  • have qualified for or be a graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification from another tertiary institution;
  • have completed a relevant major (i.e. minimum of 24 credit points of 3000-level units of study) relating to the intended Honours discipline;
  • have achieved a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 65.00 or have a credit average (65.00) in 48 credit points of relevant* 2000-level and 3000-level units of study; and
  • satisfy any additional criteria set by the relevant Head of School or Discipline.

NOTE: This degree requires completion of a major cognate to the Honours area you want to apply for. If you are?on track to complete a double major and have not yet completed your penultimate semester of study, you?have the option to undertake an embedded Honours component through a combined Bachelor of Advanced Studies degree after transferring to the degree

English language proficiency

  • IELTS score: A minimum result of 6.5 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band
  • TOEFL - IBT score: A minimum result of 85 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing
  • Pearsons Test of English: A minimum result of 61 overall and a minimum result of 54 in each band
