Nationally Recognised Higher EducationThe primary focus of the Honours course in Science at Swinburne is on research skills with a mix of advanced theory, professional training, research training, and a research project leading to a thesis. An Honours degree in Science provides a competitive advantage for employment in research positions and is a requirement for studying at PhD level.
Environmental Science units
- Chemistry Honours Lectures Part A
This unit of study exposes students to high-level lectures in the areas of current relevant research within the area of study and provides students with skills required for undertaking a postgraduate research program. - Chemistry Honours Lectures Part B
In this unit, students will be exposed to high-level lectures in the areas of current relevant research within the area of study. This unit provides students with skills required for undertaking a postgraduate research program. - Honours Project A
This unit aims to develop the ability to undertake original scientific research as part of a research group. The student will identify all important steps that must be completed to reach their overall research goal, undertake background reading and a literature review. At the completion of the unit, the student will have demonstrated the ability to define a scientific question, and have made progress towards the investigation of that question. - Honours Project C
This unit aims to develop the ability to undertake original scientific research as part of a research group. The student will identify all important steps that must be completed to reach their overall research goal, undertake background reading and a literature review. At the completion of the unit, the student will have demonstrated the ability to define a scientific question, and have made progress towards the investigation of that question. - Research and Professional Skills
This unit is designed to provide Honours students with an overview of key research skills necessary to develop confidence and competencies for fundamental and applied research. The approach will allow students to develop these aptitudes in a collaborative and supportive environment, and will involve interactive and peer-supported activities.

Entry requirements
To be eligible for admission to the Bachelor of Science (Honours) course, students must have completed a Bachelor degree (or an equivalent three-year undergraduate degree) with a relevant science major and must have at least a credit average in Science studies undertaken. Students who achieve at least two distinctions in relevant third year units may also be considered. Please note that offers made are limited by the number of places available, and preference is given to students who have completed their undergraduate degree at Swinburne. Agreement of a Project Supervisor for the Honours Research Project proposed is mandatory.
English language requirements
Satisfactory completion of one of the following:
- IELTS overall band of 6.0 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 6.0
- Swinburne’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP 5 Advanced level) with overall 65%, all skills 65%
