Bachelor of Science (Honours) (Biology)

Nationally Recognised Higher Education Generally, the honours year after the Bachelor of Science consists of the following three components, however there may be variations to this, depending on the school or discipline area in which you complete honours: a supervised but independent research program, additional courses in experimental design/technical training, and some coursework units of study (classes).

Biology Major
Biology is the study of life, ranging from molecules and their modes of action, through to understanding complex communities and their relationship with the environment. We are living in a most exciting time for studying and working in biology as new technologies, such as recombinant DNA, genomics and proteomics, place powerful tools in the hands of biologists. These advances, along with our ability to process and interpret large volumes of complex data, have generated a gigantic leap in our understanding of the fundamental molecular mechanisms and processes controlling life.

Entry requirements

Domestic Students

  • IELTS score of 6.50 or TOEFL iBT score of 85.00 or PTE score of 61.00 or its equivalent AND
  • To qualify for admission to the Bachelor of Science (Honours), you must:
    1. have qualified for or be a graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification from another tertiary institution;
    2. have completed a relevant major (i.e. minimum of 24 credit points of 3000-level units of study) relating to the intended Honours discipline;
    3. have achieved a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 65.00 or have a credit average (65.00) in 48 credit points of relevant* 2000-level and 3000-level units of study; and
    4. satisfy any additional criteria set by the relevant Head of School or Discipline.
    5. Satisfy any additional criteria set by the Faculty of Science. Admission is competitive and meeting the above is not a guarantee of entry.
