Bachelor of Science (Honours) (Biological Sciences)

The program can be completed over one year of full-time study or part-time equivalent. Courses are offered on a semester basis, i.e. two semesters per year. The Bachelor of Science (Honours) is offered at Callaghan and Ourimbah Campuses.

Please note that specialisations are not available at both campuses.

The specialisations of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth Science, Geography and Environmental Studies, and Physics are available to students at the Callaghan campus.

The Marine Science and Sustainable Resource Management specialisations are available at the Ourimbah campus only.

The Psychology specialisation is available at both the Callaghan and Ourimbah campuses.

Biological Sciences units

  • BIOL4001 - Research Methodologies: Research Methodologies forms part of the Honours Program in Biology. This course covers advanced approaches to research methodology, with relevance to Honours projects undertaken by students at the 4000 level.
  • BIOL4002A - Thesis Preparation: Thesis Preparation forms part of the Honours Program for Biological Sciences. This course provides students an opportunity to advance the skills and knowledge they acquired throughout their undergraduate studies through thesis formulation. It covers advanced topics in research methodologies and ethics relevant to the projects undertaken by the cohort of students at this level.
  • BIOL4002B - Thesis Creation: Thesis Creation forms part of the Honours Program in Biological Sciences. This course is part of the multi-sequence research component of Honours which requires the development of original research under the supervision of a member of academic staff from the School of Environmental and Life Sciences. It is a continuation from research undertaken in BIOL4002A with the students completing their final Thesis.
  • BIOL4003 - Presenting Research: Presenting Research forms part of the Honours Program for Biological Sciences. This course allows students to showcase their presentation and communication skills, and knowledge of research process and outcomes. Students will share their findings to a range of audiences, communicating the results of their theoretical and/or experimental work through a Final Seminar, Thesis Defence and Viva.

  • There are no mandated entry requirements.

Admission requirements

Supervision from a discipline academic must be sought before submitting your application.

To be admitted into the program applicants must have completed the Bachelor of Science or another cognate degree within the last five years with a minimum GPA of 5.0 in:

  • all studies undertaken in the program; or
  • across a major in the proposed discipline of study; or
  • across 80 units of 3000 level courses (which must include at least 40 units of 3000 level courses in the major where a major exists); or
  • where the applicant has completed less than 80 units at 3000 level, a GPA of 5.5 calculated from at least 60 units of 3000 level courses (which must include at least 40 units of 3000 level courses in the major where a major exists).

Minimum English language proficiency requirements

All Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the University’s English proficiency requirement.

Applicants for this program must satisfy a minimum English Language Proficiency Standard equivalent to an IELTS overall minimum of 6.0 with no subtest result below 6.0.
