Bachelor of Medicinal Chemistry (Honours)

Medicinal Chemistry covers all elements of the development of new medicines for human use, including the isolation of new medicinal agents from natural sources, the design and synthesis of new drugs, and understanding the cause of diseases at the molecular level.

Medicinal chemists design and synthesise new medicinal and pharmacological agents, monitor guidelines for testing drugs and analyse drug regulatory affairs, assess patent applications for new drugs, and teach in tertiary institutions.

The Bachelor of Medicinal Chemistry (Honours) provides excellent training in the modern techniques of chemical science applied to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic agents. During the fourth (Honours) year of this degree, you will undertake a substantial piece of independent research in Medicinal Chemistry, under the supervision of a leading researcher, together with other course work.

On completion you will be ready for a career in the pharmaceutical industry, government agencies (health, agriculture, food and drug administration), or research organisations.

RECENT SECONDARY EDUCATION

Students may gain admission to UOW on the basis of an interview and completed portfolio that meets the Australian Qualifications Framework, including portfolios from a Big Picture Education Australia school.

The minimum score for guaranteed entry (or for consideration if this course has limited places) is an ATAR-Selection Rank of 80 or an IB of 29.

ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE AND RECOMMENDED STUDIES

The University assumes students will have studied Mathematics and any two units of science.

The university recommends that students study Mathematics Advanced, Chemistry and Biology.

VOCATIONAL EDUCATION & TRAINING

Applicants who have completed a minimum of an AQF Certificate IV will be considered for admission to this degree.

HIGHER EDUCATION STUDY

For your application to be assessed on your university results you need to have completed at least one year of full-time study (or part-time equivalent) at a Bachelor's degree level or higher.

WORK & LIFE EXPERIENCE

Students wishing to undertake this course, but who do not meet academic requirements are advised to apply for a pathway program that UOW recognises, such as a UOW College pathway program or the TAFE Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC).
