Nationally Recognised Higher EducationThe major in Data science provides an opportunity for the students to gain deep knowledge and specialist technical knowledge and practical skills in making sense out of the massive volumes of data generated in the digital economy. Data is nowadays a vital asset, valued by virtually every organisation in the world. The expert skills acquired in the Data Science major will provide the basis for sensible, evidence-based decision-making. The graduates will be able to know how to apply fundamental scientific principles to the analysis of large, complex data sets, with deep insight into the big data to solve complex and challenging problems. The major also provides opportunities for an intensive, extended work-integrated learning experience and the capstone project allows graduates to practice their data science skills. This major allows graduates to seek roles as data scientists or big data engineers, architects, analysts, administrators and consultants.

Domestic Students
- There are no mandated entry requirements.
Assumed knowledge
Basic knowledge and skills in ICT (Information and Communication Technology); Basic numeracy and literacy skills.
Admission to this course is based on an entrance rank. A rank can be achieved by the following means:
- Year 12 ATAR
- Other Australian Qualification
- Work experience
- Overseas qualification
An IELTS Academic score of 6.0 overall, with no band score below 6.0 (or equivalent).

Recognised qualifications
We recognise a range of qualifications from Australia and around the world for direct entry to UC. When we assess your application to determine your selection rank, we’ll consider what secondary school qualification you’ve completed and possibly look at other factors depending on your situation.
Domestic school Leavers
If you’re currently studying Year 12 or have completed secondary school in the last two years, you’re considered a ‘recent school-leaver’. If you’ve completed an Australian Year 12, your selection rank is your Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) plus any adjustment factors you may be eligible for.
We also recognise the New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 3 and International Baccalaureate (IB) qualifications.
Domestic school non-leavers
If you’re not applying straight out of secondary school, we recognise a range of qualifications for admission into our undergraduate courses for non-school leavers:
- Any Australian Year 12 qualification such as the HSC, VCE or equivalent
- New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 3
- International Baccalaureate (IB)
- Completed vocational training of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) equivalent of Certificate III or higher (you may also be eligible for credit for these qualifications)
- Pathway, preparatory or enabling courses such as those by UC College or other recognised providers elsewhere
- Any complete or incomplete tertiary study
- Documented and paid work experience that was at least one year full-time
- Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) – UC accepts the multiple-choice version.
