La Trobe's Bachelor of Health Information Management combines the clinical and business sides of healthcare to prepare you for a career as a health information expert. You'll develop a comprehensive skillset covering areas like clinical classification, data analytics, health informatics and health systems management.
Build the foundation of your skills in health information management in your first year of study. Then deepen your technical and professional expertise throughout the rest of your degree, including 55 days of supervised professional placement.
With the perfect blend of expertise and experience, you'll graduate ready to work in all areas of healthcare – from hospitals and community health centres to specialist disease registries.

Entry requirements
Domestic Students
- There are no mandated entry requirements.
Prerequisite
VCE: Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in one of Biology, Chemistry, any Mathematics, Physical Education or Physics.
VCE: Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL.
HSC: Performance band 3 in one of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics Advanced, Mathematics Standard 2, Mathematics Extension 2 or Physics
HSC: One of English Standard, English Advanced (Band 3), English as an Additional Language or Dialect (Band 4).
OR Successful completion of the following four Open Access Pathway subjects with minimum weighted average mark (WAM) of 70%:
- HBS1HBA- HUMAN BIOSCIENCES A
- STM1001- MAKING SENSE OF DATA
- HIM1HAU - HEALTHCARE IN AUSTRALIA
- HIM1UDH - UNDERSTANDING DIGITAL HEALTH
Selection criteria
- Successful completion of Unilearn Biology (which must include online lab activities) with an overall grade of at least 60% satisfies the Biology prerequisite for this course. Applicants who complete this course must submit a copy of their Unilearn Statement of Achievement and transcript with their application.
- Applicants seeking consideration via Work Recognition must complete all requirements listed on the La Trobe University Work Recognition webpage and submit a Personal Statement, including relevant work experience and reasons for applying for this course.
- Applicants can complete and submit a Personal Statement if they wish other information to be considered during the selection process.
