Health and Physical Education teachers educate and promote a range of movement areas including games and sports, dance, gymnastics, aquatics and athletics. They also promote healthy lifestyle issues in schools to encourage lifelong movement, healthy behaviours associated with drugs, good nutrition, self-esteem development, knowledge about sexual health and interpersonal skills.

This four-year degree gives you expert theory and professional experience for employment as a Health and Physical Education teacher. You may also gain employment in other educational environments, with roles such as Game Development Officers and coaching in sports or active after school care programs. You will learn through face-to-face delivery in classrooms, online learning and community settings.

You will complete extensive professional experience throughout your degree, which allows you to learn by observation and apply your skills in the classroom. This includes a Professional Experience (PEX) in second and third year with a final seven week PEX/Internship in fourth year. You will also have opportunities for rural and international professional experiences, to study overseas with UOW's international exchange and study abroad partners, and to join international cultural immersion programs.

You can also apply for the Honours program, which is embedded in third/ fourth year, involves a research project under academic supervision. Entry to honours is based on application and merit.

ATAR-BASED ADMISSION OPTIONS

Entry to this course can be gained with:

  • Minimum ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank)
  • International Baccalaureate (IB)
  • Interstate equivalent (such as Victoria’s ENTER or Queensland OP)
  • Results in an overseas qualification deemed equivalent to Australian year 12

You will also need to complete a teaching questionnaire as part of your application.

The minimum score for guaranteed entry (or for consideration if this course has limited places) is an ATAR-Selection Rank of 75 or an IB of 26. This includes the effect of adjustment factors.

VOCATIONAL EDUCATION & TRAINING

  • Applicants who have completed a minimum of an AQF Diploma will be considered for admission to this degree. You will also need to complete a teaching questionnaire as part of your application. Your grades will be converted to a selection rank, in order for UOW to assess whether you meet the minimum ATAR-SR (which is stated above).

HIGHER EDUCATION STUDY

  • For your application to be assessed on your university results you need to have completed at least half a year of full-time study (or part-time equivalent) at a Bachelor's degree level or higher. You will also need to complete a teaching questionnaire as part of your application. Your grades will be converted to a selection rank to be used for admission purposes. Students may also be eligible for credit for prior learning.

WORK & LIFE EXPERIENCE

  • Admission to UOW is based on your academic qualifications, and generally your work or life experience is not taken into account. Students wishing to undertake this course, but who do not meet academic requirements are advised to apply for a pathway program that UOW recognises, such as a UOW College pathway program, or the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (for people over 21 years of age by 1 March in the year of enrolment) or the TAFE Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC).
