The software engineering specialisation focuses on designing high-quality computer software and offers focused studies in computer programming, databases, web-based computing, cloud computing and cyber security. It also explores formal software engineering including how to design programs and systems that are free from errors, reliable, safe, efficient and manageable.

You will learn how to use computers to provide solutions and deliver high-quality code on time that can be integrated into existing operating environments. You will also use the principles of computer design, engineering, management, psychology and sociology in small or large multinational companies.

Entry requirements

Prerequisites

Queensland Year 12 (or equivalent) General English subject (Units 3 & 4, C); Mathematical Methods (Units 3 & 4, C); and one of Chemistry or Physics (Units 3 & 4, C).

Studying Specialist Mathematics (Units 3 & 4, C) and both Chemistry and Physics is recommended as students will have increased flexibility in their studies.

Recent secondary education

You're a recent secondary student if you've completed secondary education in the current year or previous 2 years. This includes secondary education completed in Australia or overseas at a school, TAFE, or other VET or higher education provider.

Australian Year 12: If you're currently studying Year 12 in Australia and you’re eligible for an ATAR, this will be used as your entry score.

Higher education study

If your highest level of study is in higher education (such as at university), you can be assigned a selection rank based on:

  • your level of study (such as bachelor's or master's level)
  • the duration of your study
  • your grade point average (GPA).

Once you've completed 1 year of full-time study (or equivalent) at bachelor level or higher, your selection rank will be based on this study only – even if your rank from another qualification is higher.

Vocational Education and Training (VET) study

You can be assigned a selection rank based on Vocational and Education Training (VET) study if your highest level of study is a competency-based or graded:

  • AQF Certificate III (completed)
  • AQF Certificate IV (completed)
  • AQF Diploma
  • sub-bachelor level study (based on the level and duration of study, and your grade point average).

Work and life experience

If you left secondary education more than 2 years ago and haven't done any VET or higher education study, you can be assigned a selection rank based on:

  • previous secondary education
  • post-secondary professional and para-professional qualifications and service
  • the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) or employment experience, as long as you're over 18 and not a current Year 12 student.

English language requirements

  • IELTS overall 6.5; reading 6; writing 6; speaking 6; listening 6. For other English Language Proficiency Tests and Scores approved for UQ
  • TOEFL iBT (including Paper Edition) - Overall 87, listening 19, reading 19, writing 21 and speaking 19.
  • PTE Academic - Overall Score of 64 and 60 in all sub bands.
  • BE - A minimum overall grade of 4 plus a minimum grade of C in all macro skills.
  • CES - Overall 176 and 169 in all sub bands.
