Macquarie University
Bachelor of Arts (Indigenous Studies)
Nationally Recognised Higher EducationIndigenous studies is a diverse, interdisciplinary area of study, drawing on a large body of global literature. A comprehensive understanding of Indigenous studies will enhance your career prospects in a range of professions, including advocacy, health, education, social work, government relations, community development, media, youth outreach, arts and heritage, and public policy analysis.
The Indigenous Studies major is underpinned by two key principles: (1) Indigenous people as agents of their own destinies within the post-colonial era, and (2) the valuing of Indigenous perspectives and voices. There is also a strong focus on working effectively and ethically with Indigenous people and Indigenous research methodologies. Since our foundation in 1964, we have aspired to be a different type of university: one unbound by ivory towers and sandstone walls. Rather, we are focused on fostering collaboration between students, academics, industry and society, encouraging all to traverse the boundaries of their own perspectives and effect change.
Over the years, we have grown to become the centre of a vibrant local and global community – a place of constant stimulus and human interaction. Together, we advance world-class theoretical thinking and translate it into real-world solutions.
We’re connecting people across the most diverse fields of knowledge to create bold new possibilities: for their careers, intellectual endeavours, enterprises and the common good.
