Nationally Recognised Higher EducationThrough the study of a broad range of literary texts and approaches to reading them, the English major familiarises students with literary traditions and contemporary literary cultures. This major will reveal the varied ways in which people have lived, thought, felt and imagined, opening up new worlds of understanding. Students will develop vital transferrable skills in effective reading, writing, analysis and interpretation that will equip them for rewarding careers in teaching, journalism, the media, and other professions that require articulate and culturally literate graduates.

Entry requirements
Domestic Students
- There are no mandated entry requirements.
To be eligible for admission to the course, an applicant must have completed the following prerequisites at year 12, or equivalent:
New South Wales
- Assumed knowledge: 2 units of English (any) (Band 3), Mathematics (other than Mathematics General 2) for study in Mathematics (Band 3)
Queensland
- Prerequisites: English (Units 3 & 4, C)
Victoria
- Prerequisites: Units 3 and 4 a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or 20 in any other English.
- Prerequisite for study in Mathematics: Units 3 and 4: Mathematical Methods
English language proficiency requirements:
- Academic IELTS: Overall score: 6.5
- TOEFL: Internet based total of 79
- PTE Academic: 58
- CAE: Overall CAE score 185
- ACU English Language test; or ACU EAP: B (65-74%)
Required Year 12 studies and subjects required to meet prerequisites:
- Australian Capital Territory: ACT Year 12 Certificate; subject results need to be accredited as T or H and be studied as a major.
- New South Wales: Higher School Certificate (HSC); HSC subject results need to be passed at a minimum of Performance Band 2.
- Queensland: Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE); General subject results from units 3 & 4 need to be completed to a minimum of C grade.
- Victoria: Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE); VCE subject results (Units 3 and 4) need to be completed at the minimum 25 VCE study score (or other study score as stated).
EFTSL value of 0.125. Units with a cp value of a multiple of 10 have corresponding EFTSL values.
