The Enrolment Process for ELICOS

Begin your English journey in Australia by selecting a course, enrolling, obtaining your visa, and arranging travel.

Step 1 - Pick a course type

Determine the type of English course you need, weighing up the outcome you’re after and what you want to experience in Australia.

There are six general course types available, with a focus on different goals. Some cover preparation for internationally recognised English proficiency exams, while others have an emphasis on general conversational English.

The six types of courses on offer fall under the following categories:

Step 2 - Search the courses available

Once you’ve decided on the type of course that best suits your needs, search the options available.

You can use our simple search tool here to start narrowing down your options.

Step 3 - Assess your options

There are a wide variety of English courses on offer in Australia. Once you have a shortlist, start assessing your options, looking at factors such as:

  • Location
  • Fees
  • Duration
  • Entry requirements
  • Commencement dates

Step 4 - Assess the entry requirements

Each English course will have different entry requirements, some of which might relate to existing English language proficiency or other criteria you might need to meet to be eligible to apply.

Double check the entry requirements of the course you are considering including eligibility, fees, the Visa required, and any English language proficiency.

Step 5 - Apply for the course

Each course has a formal application process, which can be time-consuming to complete. Applications can usually be made online or in writing.

You can also engage an authorised representative or education agent to complete the application on your behalf.

Once submitted, applications can take time to assess, but if successful, you will receive an offer letter.

Step 6 - Offer and Confirmation

If your application is successful, you will receive a Letter of Offer. Take the time to read this carefully to ensure you understand the conditions, including:

  • The course details and duration
  • Your rights and any refund conditions should you not complete the course
  • Fees you will need to pay

If you are satisfied with the offer and its conditions, you will need to accept it in writing. At this stage you will also be required to pay your deposit. Be sure to keep a copy of your Letter of Offer as this contains useful information about the course and your study conditions.

Once the deposit has been paid and you have accepted your Letter of Offer, you will receive a Confirmation of Enrolment.

This confirmation will be used as part of the visa application process as proof you are enrolled in an accredited course.

Step 7 - Visa

You will need a visa to visit, study and work in Australia. The type of visa required depends on the main purpose for your stay, and the length of study.

For example, if you intend to have a working holiday in Australia and complete a 12-week English course while you are here, that would require a different visa to someone who intends to study full-time for 50 weeks.

You can learn more about visas and the application process here.

Step 8 - Travel arrangements and accommodation

Once you have your Confirmation of Enrolment and visa, you can turn your attention to travel arrangements and also organising accommodation.

There are a range of accommodation options for overseas students, including:

  • homestay (living with a local family)
  • private rentals (renting an apartment or house from a real estate agent and/or landlord),
  • on-campus student housing (dorm rooms provided by the university)
  • specialised ‘international student accommodation’ managed by agencies or student housing providers

The best choice depends on the student's needs for independence, cultural immersion, and budget, and your education provider may be able to offer assistance when it comes to finding the right accommodation option to suit your needs.
